Investigation of traffic safety at railway grade crossing

Railway level crossings are the points where the road and the railway intersect at the same level and are the risky points of road and railway transportation. The statistics of the level crossings in our country and in the countries of the world show the risk at the crossings. There are high rates in Europe and Turkey of accidents that occur when the train hits a person, which is one of the causes of accidents at level crossings. The collision of the train with the person makes it necessary to mention the existence of pedestrian level crossings as well as the pedestrians using the vehicle level crossings. Pedestrian level crossings are not included in the level crossing classification and level crossing regulation in our country. However, there are such crossings in our country and people from all walks of society use them. On the other hand, it is necessary to reveal the importance of the level crossing issue by looking at level crossings from a different perspective. Combinations of urban form and railway relationship affect the accessibility of level crossings to residential uses. Therefore, in the study; The current situation has been revealed by examining the statistics and legal regulations of the level crossings in our country, and the level crossings in the selected three district settlements have been analyzed. Based on the exemplary practices and legal regulations in England and Germany, a sample design suitable for our country has been made. It is aimed to find solutions to the problems caused by the level crossing and railway by including the reflections of the railway locations in the selected settlements on the urban form-railway relationship.
