Özet (EN)

Diabetes mellitus and cancer are important diseases affecting people all over the world. Renal injury in diabetes mellitus and nephrotoxicity due to the treatment of cancer by cisplatin are significant adverse effects. This study was undertaken to evaluate the protective effect of curcumin against nephrotoxicity in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. Rats were divided into five groups; while the first group was selected as control, the other groups were allocated as experimental models of diabetes by the administration of streptozotocin, Group 2 consisted of diabetes only, Group 3 diabetes plus cisplatin, Group 4 diabetes plus curcumin, and Group 5 included diabetes, cisplatin and curcumin, simultaneously. Following the applications, rats were decapitated and their blood and kidney tissues were removed, plasma urea and kreatinin levels were measured by autoanalyzer. The kidney tissue malondialdehyde, reduced glutathione levels and catalase activities were determined by spectrophotometry. It was determined that the application of diabetes and cisplatin increased plasma urea/ creatinine and MDA levels, whereas it decreased catalase and GSH levels in kidney tissue. This study showed that applications of curcumin may ameliorate induced nephrotoxicity findings partially; and kidney damage induced by both diabetes and cisplatin, moderately. Key Words: Diabetes, Cisplatin, Nephrotoxicity, Curcumin, Rat.
