The effect of resveratrol on oat-1, oat-3, oct-1, oct-2 protein expression of kidney tissue in diabetes induced rats

Herbal medicines have been used for thousand years to fight diseases and improve body functions. Polyphenols available in these herbal drugs are considered as major nutrients responsible for improving general health and for providing cure for certain specific pathological conditions.In this study, STZ-induced diabetic rats with resveratrol, was reported on renal tissue OAT-1, OAT-3, OCT-1, and OCT-2 protein expression, MDA levels, serum urea nitrogen, creatinine levels and histologic changes. The male Wistar rats (n =40, 6-8 weeks old) were divided into four groups. (i) The group which received standart a standart diet was assigned as Control group (C); (ii) Resveratrol (RES 20 mg/kg i.p. body weight per day) treated group as (RES); (iii) Streptozotosin (single dose STZ, 55 mg / kg i.p. body weight) treated group as (STZ); (iv) After the injection of STZ (single dose STZ, 55 mg / kg i.p. body weight); resveratrol (RES 20 mg/kg i.p. body weight per day) treated group as (STZ / RES). The research finished in 8 weeks.In the animals that receive resveratrol the levels of serum urea and creatinine indicating reduced renal injury were significantly lower as compared to the STZ injected group. The present study demonstrates that the administration of resveratrol exerts a renal therapeutic and protective effect in a rat model of diabetic nephropathy STZ-provoked by a single intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of STZ. The renal tissue MDA levels showed a significant increase in STZ-treated rats compared the control rats. OAT-1, OAT-3, OCT-1, and OCT-2 protein expression level were significantly up-regulated in rats treated with resveratrol. Histopathological findings showed that resveratrol treatment alleviated the STZ-induced tubular damage and most of the changes produced by STZ.
