An Experimental study about histopathologic effects of different suture materials on tracheal anastomoses

SUMMARY Tracheal anastomoses was performed on 21 mongrel dogs ( mean age 4 months, mean weight 7 kg ) to compare histopatologic effects with synthetic nonabsobable suture ethibond ( n=7 ) and absorbable sutures vicryl ( n=7 ) and PDS ( n=7 ). The interrupted tecmgue was used in anastomoses. Dogs were killed between 26 - 76 days ( mean 44 days ). No stenosis was observed in all groups. The surface of anastomoses evaluated histopathologically about epitelium, granulation and fibrozis. There is a significant difference statistically between absorbable sutures ( vicryl, PDS ) and non-absorbable suture ( ethibond )in histopathologic evaluation of epitelium, ( p<0.05 ). There is not statistical difference of granulation and fibrozis between groups ( p>0.05 ). These results suggested that absorbabl suture material ( such as vicryl ) is to be preferably in tension free tracheal anastomoses. 46
