System change in naval force

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk upon realizing the fact that, the Naval Force inherited from collapsed Ottoman Empire was damaged and devoid of operational capabilities, instructed the formation of a new and modern Turkish Navy which could defend the rights and interests of young Turkish Republic in the Sea. Beginning from its initial years the logistical, operational and technical methods employed by Turkish Navy have been deeply influenced by the general course of Turkish foreign policy.The doctrinal and operational principles used by Turkish Navy during the last years Ottoman Empire were corresponding to those of German Navy and these principles had been adopted by newly formed Turkish Navy. Despite intensive efforts, a distinct and permanent systematic structure in terms of logistic, operations and training methods to be used in the Navy, could not be established until World War II.Owing to both the U.S. Military Aid which had begun after the end of WWII and reached its peak with Turkey?s membership to NATO and the recommendations of US Military Aid Groups the German Navy-origined doctrinal and operational system that was in effect in Turkish Navy at that time began to be replaced by American system.The American system, that became entrenched in Turkish Navy through continuous U.S Military Aid assuming the forms of training of personnel, technical and logistical support, started to change in a more national direction after the incidents which took place in Cyprus in 1963. The United States imposed a firearms embargo on Turkey after the Peace Operation conducted by Turkish Armed Forces in Cyprus and this embargo caused Turkish Navy to experience significant hardships. These hard times taught Turkish Navy the vitality of being able to maintain an independent existence. Therefore a number of national operational and strategical doctrines have been developed by Turkish Navy. These system changes that were made in accordance with standarts of NATO and U.S have been applied to the systems in use in way of little modifications.
