The bryophyte flora of Denizli mountains (Babadağ, Honaz dağı)

The bryophyte flora of Babadag and Honaz Mountain (Denizli/Turkey), two of the important mountains of Western Turkey, have been investigated. As a result of identifications of 1997 specimens collected from the area, 274 moss species belonging to 22 families and 79 genera and 32 species of hornworts (1) and liverworts (31) belonging to 17 families and 24 genera have been found. Together with the records (1967) given by the Walter, the bryophyte flora of Babadag and Honaz Mountain are increased to a total number of 310 taxa belonging to 103 genera and 39 families. Didymodon australasiae, Crossidium crassinerve, Phascum cuspidatum var. arcuatum, Weissia breutelii, G. britannica and G. pilosissima are new to bryophyte flora of Turkey among the others. 74 taxa of mosses and 3 taxa of liverworts are new records for square C11 according to Henderson?s (1961) grid system. Identified taxa in our study area have been presented alphabetically in the table with the date of plants collected and determined, synonyms, existing locations, herbarium and collection numbers and worldwide distributions. Furthermore, these taxa were listed to families level [mosses: Corley ve ark. (1981); liverworts and hornworts: Grolle (1983)], spesific and subspesific taxa vere presented alphabetically. Orthotrichum cupulatum Hoffm. ex Brid. var. bistratosum Schiffn. (Schiffner, 1913) and Grimmia nutans Bruch (Bruch, 1929) had been described from Turkey. The latter was also collected from Meteora (Greece) and was described as a new species (G. meteorae) by Townsend in 1989, Greven (1995) compared two collections and found that G. meteorae was a synonym of G. nutans, a neglected taxon during 60 years. G. nutans was collected from Babadag after 75 years of the first collection (zmir, 1929). Again, Orthotrichum cupulatum Hoffm. ex Brid. var. bistratosum Schiffn. A taxon known only from its type (Schiffner, 1913) and Spain (Guerra, 1985) collected from SE Turkey. Interestingly, this taxon was also collected from Babadag (after 91 years).
