Hazardous effects of an earthquake andmethods for mitigation of these effects are explained. Earthquake -Architecture relationship is highlighted and it is pointed out, via cooperativestudies, that improving of architectural education is an essential factor for(earthquake) mitigation.In the content of this thesis, in the first chapter, the information is given aboutthe aim, the content and the methodologies of the study.In the second chapter, in which earth and an earthquake is defined, theconnection between earth and occurrence of an earthquake is described viatheories. World and Turkey?s tendency for earthquake is investigated and theinformation is given about the big earthquakes that occurred in Turkey. Inaccordance with the research results, it is emphasized that a rigorousearthquake that can occur in the Marmara Region is expected and because ofthe importance of this situation, the urgency of the studies that should be doneis pointed out.viiIn the third chapter, the information about hazardous effects of earthquakesare given and earthquake damage and loses occurred in Turkey areinvestigated. It is emphasized that the occurred damages are above the limits ofthe acceptable value and the importance of mitigation studies are mentionedand detailed explanation is provided.In the fourth chapter, the relationship between architectural education andearthquake is investigated. Earthquake safe architecture is explained and therole of the architect in building construction is explored. It is explained that therelevance of the architectural design is a major factor in the earthquake hazardmitigation. Relevant to this subject, it is stated that the education ofarchitectural students, architectural school faculty members and architects isessential and necessary. The architectural education in Turkey is researched,and the process of the present education and having the authority of practicingarchitecture is compared with the examples of USA and Japan. The reason ofchoosing examples from USA and Japan is that these countries are notconfronted with hazards in our country although they are also earthquakecountries.In the last chapter, as determined in the fourth chapter, deficiency ofarchitectural education in Turkey is evaluated when it is compared with othercountries.
