The effects of resilience-focused psychoeducation in patients diagnosed with depression

Özet (EN)

This study was conducted to determine the effects of resilience-focused psychoeducation on the level of depression, hopelessness, coping with stress, and psychological resilience in patients diagnosed with depression. This semi-experimental study was conducted using pre and post-tests, with control groups. All the patients diagnosed as depression Kahramanmaraş Necip Fazıl City Hospital in during the research constitute the research population. The sample of the research has been consisted of 60 patients who are suitable for the criteria of the research, 30 patients in research group and 30 patients in control group. The data has been collected by using The Personal Information Form, Beck Depresssion Scale (BDI), Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS), Ways of Coping Scale (WCS) and The Resilience Scale for Adults (RSA). For evaluating the dates, percentile, arithmetic mean, standart deviation, t-test for dependent and independent groups and chi-square analysis has been used. Psychoeducation was provided in the form of group training 2 times a week in total of 10 sessions. For the pretest, experimental and control groups the levels of hopelessness and depression was seen high level, the level of psychological resilience was seen moderate level and patients less used effectively- active coping strategies and more used of passive coping strategies. The BDI and BHS posttest score of the experimental group was found to be decreased to be significantly according to pretest score (p<0.05), at the comparison of the control group was not found to be significantly decreased (p>0.05). The increases in the score of WCS sub-dimension Self-confident, Optimistic approaches and seeking of social support coping styles and the decrease of score of the Helpless approach of patients in experimental group in posttest compared with pretest are significant (p<0.05). It is not important difference in the patients in control group (p>0.05), except seeking of social support coping styles. RSA scores of patients in experimental and control group in posttest compared with pretest are not significantly different (p<0.05). Consequently, the psychoeducation has been effective on decreasing the level of depression, hopelessness levels of the patients with depression, and increasing effectively- active coping strategies and decreasing the passive coping strategies. It has been partially effective on the level of psychological resilience.
