Abstract (EN)

This doctoral thesis traverses the associations between transdiagnostic factors of time perspective (TP), cognitive and behavioral processes (i.e., cognitive fusion (CF) and experiential avoidance(EA)), emotion reactivity construct, and cognitive/behavioral emotion regulation strategies and the pathways these factors impact psychological distress (i.e., depressive and anxious symptomology). Three interlinked studies make up this thesis framework and try to procure an exhaustive explanation of how these transdiagnostic factors affect psychological distress. The first study explores the roles of experiential avoidance and cognitive fusion (highlighted in the Inflexahex or psychological inflexibility in the acceptance and commitment therapy paradigm) as serial exchanging mediators in the association between Deviation from a Balanced Time Perspective (DBTP) and symptoms of depression and anxiety. Employing a sample of 203 participants (155 female) aged 17-73 (M = 28.45, SD = 11.43), this investigation showed that CF and EA mediated the association between DBTP and depression and anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, a reveres mediation model was tested, and results indicated significant mediation for depression symptoms. The findings of this study accentuate the cardinality of targeting cognitive and behavioral processes such as CF and EA in therapeutic interventions for individuals prone to symptoms of depression and anxiety due to unbalanced time perceptions. The second study used a three-wave longitudinal assessment with 148 university students (82 males, 55.4%) to examine the predictive role of emotion reactivity and DBTP on symptoms of depression and anxiety. Findings showed that higher rates of DBTP in baseline assessment predicted elevated levels of depression and anxiety, while in the long run, DBTP was linked with reduced levels of anxiety. According to the latent growth curve mediation modeling, DBTP and negative time perspective (i.e., past negative, present fatalistic, future negative) acted as mediators for the baseline assessment between emotion reactivity and symptoms of depression and anxiety. However, for the longitudinal part of the assessment, DBTP suppressed the associations between emotion reactivity and anxiety and did not mediate the associations with depression. These findings indicate how TP can be a dynamic construct and the importance of considering contextual factors in assessing these associations with psychological distress. The third study extends the inquiry cross-culturally (i.e., culture as moderator) by examining 513 Iranian (301 males, 58.7%) and 470 Turkish participants (119 males, 25.3%) to understand the mediating roles of adaptive/maladaptive, cognitive/behavioral emotion regulation strategies between DBTP and symptoms of depression and anxiety. The findings showed robust associations between DBTP, cognitive and behavioral emotion regulation strategies, and symptoms of depression and anxiety in both cultures. Maladaptive cognitive and behavioral emotion regulation strategies mediated the associations between DBTP and depression and anxiety in both cultures. Adaptive cognitive emotion regulation strategies showed a mediating role only for the Iranian sample. The possible socio-cultural and psychological factors affecting these associations were discussed. Conclusions The present thesis emphasizes how essential transdiagnostic factors are for comprehending psychological distress. Integrating the findings from these three research can provide an excellent basis to develop efficacious interventions that reduce psychological distress by accounting for contextual and cultural factors. In relevant sections, the practical implications for tailored therapies are addressed based on the results of each study. By addressing the subtleties of cognitive, emotional, and behavioral processing, this research increases our knowledge of the factors behind psychological distress and has applications for individualized and process-based mental health interventions.
