Comparison of the common items of verbs in the dictionaries of derleme and tarama

The purpose of preparing this thesis is to determine the common verb items in Derleme and Tarama Dictionaries and at the same time to identify the meanings which do not match up with each other. To avoid from repetition during compiling such verbs, we did not included the verbs which have the same meaning in the comparison table included in the Appendix section of Derleme Sözlüğü. In addition, we should note that we constituted this study based on the printed dictionaries only from the Turkish Language Institution Publishing, without using the Tarama Sözlüğü and Türkiye Türkçesi Ağızları Sözlüğü. Since the scope of our study is constituted by the common verbs in the Derleme Sözlüğü and the Tarama Sözlüğü, first of all we identified the common verb items in these dictionaries and determined the common meaning in these verbs. Apart from these, we compared under a separate table those verbs which are in fact common, but show small voice differences in dialects. Thus, we presented the way of reflection of phonetic conditions of such words into literary texts, and we showed which voices changes while being converted to writing. In our study, we ascertained that the people preparing the dictionaries expressed the verbs having different meanings in different ways, and that the small voice differences in words which have the same meaning derives from the usage of standard language by the intellectuals. Apart from these, as for the common items and meanings forming the main subject of our study: a) The number of common verbs in the Derleme and Tarama Dictionaries is 1294 in the main table, while the number of verbs in the table reflecting the minor voice differences is 178. There are totally 1472 items. b) The number of common meanings in Derleme and Tarama Dictionaries is 672 in the main table, while it is 80 in the table reflecting the minor voice changes. When we combine the meanings in the dictionaries, we have 5215 meaning. The percentage of common meanings within this meaning approximately 14.42%. We see that the percentage of uncommon meanings is approximately 85.58%. This reveals magnitude of difference in the meanings ascribed to common items. c) The number of meanings taking place in the Derleme Sözlüğü, but not taking place in the Tarama Sözlüğü is 2912 in the main table, and it is 234 in the table reflecting the minor voice changes. We see that totally 3146 meanings did not reflected to writing language. This has a share of some 60.33% within the total meaning. d) The number of meanings found in the Tarama Sözlüğü, but not found in the Derleme Sözlüğü is 1194 in the main table, while it is 123 on the table reflecting minor voice changes. Totally 1317 meanings were not used by the public. The total percentage of such meanings which did not pass to public language is about 25.25%. It is noticed that the intellectuals feed from public by a rate of 74.75%. e) While the dictionaries are formed, referrals were made to the meanings related to each other. The status of referrals is 338 in the main table where there are common items from the Derleme Sözlüğü, is 47 in the table reflecting small voice changes, is 273 in the table including the common items from Tarama Sözlüğü, and it is 41 in the table reflecting the minor voice differences. Totally 435 referrals were made in the Derleme Sözlüğü and 314 were made in the Tarama Sözlüğü. The percentage of meanings referred in the Derleme Sözlüğü in 29.55% within the total number of items. The percentage of meanings referred in the Tarama Sözlüğü is 21.33% within the total number of items. The fact that the rate of referral is much is related to the different ways of pronouncing a word. It is normal that the number of referrals is low in the Tarama Sözlüğü, since a standard language is used there.
