Unionism and kemalism in the era of revolutions (1919-1926)

Abstract (EN)

Comittee of Union and Progress arised as a political community in the Ottoman Empire structure. This community displayed an opposed attitude against the unique political power, Sultan; endeavored for the creation of constitutionalism; struggled for the realization of political, social and economical transformation. Young Turks who had been the only arbiter in the political authority between 1908 and 1918, could not prevent the dissolution of the state as a result of the execution of inaccurate policies and were blamed for the fall of the Otoman Empire.Kemalism is a national movement which evolved, revolted and organized in order to regenerate a country which became collapsed and wracked. This new formation which set out to create a new nation state from collapsed empire; benefited from organizational principal that Young Turks formed and Defense Law Communities was built on the local organizations of Comittee of Union and Progress. At the same time, the fact that the national struggle was not the Unionist formation was emphasized particularly and it was mentioned at every turn that the Unionism remained as former understanding and policy. The formation which was under the leadership of Mustafa Kemal, avoided all kinds of Unionist discourse, embarked in a political dispute that would last many years and this dispute was enhanced with the Republic.Unionists who receded from the political process subsequent to the Kemalist dominance in Turkey, employed themselves to resurrect the Comittee of Union and Progress; quested a new policy against the government and President in order to come into force again. Unionists entered to the Turkish political arena via taking place in the Progressive Republican Party. Unionists who were supported excessively by the people via sheltering significant characters of the National Struggle era, lost their efficiencies by the closure of the party. Unionists who understood that they would not seize the power, organized secretly in order to came into power. They planned to clear off Mustafa Kemal for the sake of their personal ambitions and power inclinations. Due to the failure of the assassination, they neither cleared off Mustafa Kemal nor came into power. Failure of the assasination which was the last attempt of Unionists, caused the liquidation of them via Independence Courts.
