Views of reading culture in the digital age: A review on Youtube book channels

Abstract (EN)

The study which aims to determine the reading culture views of secondary school students, who have a book promotion channel on Youtube, was carried out with a digital ethnography pattern. Within the scope of the study, the channels on Youtube containing the contents of the books belonging to secondary school children were examined and interviews were conducted with the children who have channels that can be communicated. The data obtained from the videos and interviews were analyzed by content analysis. The codes that emerged as a result of the content analysis were combined under the relevant themes and presented. By analyzing the research data, findings were obtained regarding the stories of middle school children creating a channel on Youtube, the video content they created, their socioeconomic framework, the factors affecting their reading process, the books they included in their channels and the reader's views. As a result of the study, it was concluded that by taking the content producers that children watched in the media as an example, they also created a book channel, they formed a common understanding to create a book channel on Youtube, and their families provided them with various opportunities in socioeconomic terms. In addition, the results were obtained in the study, where there are factors such as family, school, teacher, friends and social media that affect children's reading processes, channel owners talk about their choices and classifications for the books they include on their channels, and they present themselves as individuals who have gained the habit of reading and have the characteristics of critical readers.
