An examination of digital game addiction, emotional intelligence and psychological resilience

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among digital game addiction, emotional intelligence, and psychological resilience. The study was conducted with a total of 405 students enrolled in two different schools located in the Ümraniye district of Istanbul, Türkiye. Data were collected using the Personal Information Form, the Digital Game Addiction Scale, the Emotional Intelligence Scale for Children, and the Child and Youth Resilience Measure (CYRM). Statistical analyses were performed using IBM SPSS Statistics 27. Independent-samples t-tests, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Pearson correlation analysis, and Hayes' PROCESS Macro (Version 4.2) were employed to analyze the data. The findings revealed a significant negative correlation between digital game addiction scores and emotional intelligence scores, as well as a significant negative correlation between digital game addiction scores and psychological resilience scores. In contrast, a significant positive correlation was found between psychological resilience scores and emotional intelligence scores. Furthermore, participants' psychological resilience scores differed significantly according to the presence of family-imposed time limits on digital game use and the duration of daily digital game play. Finally, the findings indicated that emotional intelligence played a mediating role in the relationship between digital game addiction and psychological resilience.
