The relationship between digital game dependency with academic success in primary school students

The purpose of this research; to reveal the relationship between the digital game addiction and the course success of the junior high school students; and to assess whether this relationship is significantly different from some demographic information of the students. A total of 697 primary school students, including 234 state, 266 imam hatip and 197 private, who were admitted to the Gaziantep Ilis Sahinbey District National Education Directorate participated in the research. Sociodemographic structure scale including school, class, gender, income and educational status were used to obtain data. Dr. Osman Tolga Arıcak's digital game addiction scale was used. The coding and analysis of the results obtained in the study were carried out in SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences) program. The responses of the students to the socio-demographic structure and digital game dependency scale were analyzed by correlation and regression analyzes and compared between the tables. According to the research done, there was a meaningful relationship between gender, technological opportunities and financial status of the family and play addiction. However, no relation was found according to the education level of the family. Children who are addicted to games also experience negative emotions as a major factor. In addition, students who study in private secondary schools are more likely to be addicted to games. Keywords: Student, Game, Digital Game Dependency, Academic Success
