Abstract (EN)
Games are played with various aims and ways based on a set of rules that continuously develop and are an inseparable part of our lives and culture. Individuals from every age group play games to let off steam and make use of their spare time and for fun. Games are virtual conflict environments with idiosyncratic dynamics, culture, and rules established on entertainment motivation on the outside of real life. While the visualization, competition feeling, and thrill are attractive for gamers, narratives of games also have a powerful impact on gamers. Games enable gamers to identify themselves with a historical hero, feel like a part of a period in history and realize themselves with success, and earn temporary identities. The digital game industry has been affected by the rapid change of the entertainment industry as of the development of the games named OXO (tic-tac-toe), which is the first digital image game, and Spacewar that was developed by Stephen Russel in 1981 and became one of the first games played on the computer. Thus, the digital game industry has become one of the sectors that rapidly develop on a global scale. The entertainment industry continues to change rapidly; fictional worlds are becoming the focal point of this change, and digital games that are products of the culture industry play a significant role in this change. Overwatch was announced on November 7th, 2014, released on May 24th, 2016, and developed by Blizzard Entertainment. The game draw attention as a First-Person Shooter game that is the best and one of its kind among the digital games; which are the most important products of the culture industry. Overwatch offers diversity, depth, and style with its characters from a variety of nations and ethnicities, extraordinary voice designs; which are features provided to gamers in very few games. Also, Overwatch draws attention as a game fulfilling its potential with many gamers. Individuals gathering together within the virtual world for gaming may practice their ideologies in these environments and may come across an ideology pressed upon them. Overwatch includes stories associated with the Gulf War and bombardments in Iraq and simulations of wars in addition to daily female-male-family relationships, sexuality, and similar emotions. This study aims to examine this game within the scope of its features. This study approaches Overwatch as a text and uses text analysis method, which is a qualitative research method used in the analysis of media content.
