Determination of anxiety, depression and psychological resilience levels of mothers of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

This research was done descriptively with the aim of determining the anxiety, depression and psychological resilience levels of the Mothers of Children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity (ADHD). The study's universe consisted of mothers of children diagnosed with ADHD who applied to be treated remotely to a state hospital in the provincial center of Gaziantep between April and August 2017.The number of samples was 54 according to the power analysis. It was conducted with 163 mothers who volunteered to participate in the research. "Individual Information Form", "Zung Depression Scale", "Beck Anxiety Scale" and "Psychological Durability Scale for Adults" were used to collect the data. The data was analyzed with the SPSS Windows version 24.0 package program. Shapiro Wilk testi, Student's t test, Mann Whitney U test, one way variance analysis (ANOVA) and LSD multiple comparison tests, Kruskal Wallis test and All pairwise multiple comparison tests were used in the evaluation of the data. The mean scores of the scales were found as 50.70 ± 11.17 for the Zung Depression Scale, 17.41 ± 11.05 for the Beck Anxiety Scale and 116.68 ± 19.74 for the Psychological Durability Scale. Mothers of children with ADHD were found to have mild anxiety and depression levels and good psychological resilience. A statistically significant relationship was found between the mental health status of the parents and the child's environmental adaptation, Zung Depression Scale, Beck Anxiety Scale and Psychological Endurance Scale (p<0.05). Psychiatric nurses may contribute to assessing the anxiety and depression status of mothers, providing guidance when necessary, increasing the psychological well-being of mothers, and improving their coping skills.
