This study is based on an investigation designed to explore the potential influences of match and mismatch in the beliefs the teachers and students hold about language, and language teaching and leaming on the leaming outcomes in foreign language classrooms. The research context is a language center, Yadim, (where the researeher is a member of teaching staft) providing preparatory English Language instruction to prospective students of various departments at Çukurova University. Forty eight students and fo ur core language teachers were selected for participation in the study based on mateh scores obtained through Statview analysis of the language leaming inventory (Wenden and Rubin 1987) administered to 200 students at beginner level, and 17 teachers. Students and teachers whose beliefs were in agreement, and those whose beliefs did not resemble were assigned to two separate groups. The two groups reeeived the same instruction for a period of two months. The classes were observed, and the observations and the inventories provided a base for subsequent interviews with the teachers and the leamers. At the end of the eourse, the leamers in the two groups were given an achievement test. The test scores of the two groups were compared, and triangulated with observation and interview data.
