Özet (EN)
This academic thesis explores the complex relationship between religion and horror films, focusing on the depiction of religious themes, symbols and beliefs in this genre. The aim of this research is to analyze how horror films use religion as a narrative device to evoke fear, explore the limits of faith and challenge traditional religious norms. Drawing on a diverse selection of horror films spanning several decades, this thesis explores the multiple ways in which religion is used within the genre. By examining changing representations of religious characters, rituals and iconography, this study aims to shed light on the wider cultural and societal implications of these cinematic representations. Religion has always served as a rich source of inspiration for horror films, allowing people to explore and sometimes discover their deepest fears, the supernatural and the unknown. Religion has proven to be fertile ground for storytelling in this genre, adding an extra layer of mystery and mystique. From demonic possession to ancient rituals, religion has become an integral element in shaping the narrative of many horror films and enhancing their creepy, eerie atmosphere. Fear has long been a prominent theme in horror films, serving as a source of symbolism and social criticism. By tapping into our basic fears, exploring belief systems and utilizing religious iconography, filmmakers have created unforgettable and disturbing experiences. Whether it's to heighten the sense of dread or challenge established notions, the inclusion of religion in horror films continues to captivate audiences, leaving an indelible mark on the genre's evolution. As filmmakers push the boundaries of the genre, we can be sure that religion will remain an enduring, compelling and fascinating aspect of horror cinema.
