An investigation of bird migration at Dinar İncesu wind power plant and its surroundings

Abstract (EN)

In this study, the effects of İncesu Wind Power Plant (RES) on birds where is located in Lakes Region and is an important areas for birds for feeding, resting, stop-over and transition region for birds. According to this; regional status of migratory species living in the region, migration routes of migratory species, fligh frequencies, horizontal flight distances to the nearest turbine, detection of bird species nesting around the turbine and their interactions with turbines were investigated. Furthermore, carcass search studies were performed and the dead or injured birds were examined. Besides, Incesu RES's habitat loss, disturbance, barrier effect, and collision effects were evaluated. Nine vintage points and transect surveys were performed using binoculars and cameras with tele-lens. A total of 108 bird species belonging to 33 families from 17 order were detected in a total of 63 days of ornithological monitoring conducted in 2017 in approximately 5 kilometres area of the RES site and surrounding area and Karakuyu Reeds. Of these species, 49 are domestic (Y), 25 are summer visitors (YZ), 17 are winter visitors (KZ) and 17 are transit migrants (T). A total of 13,162 individuals were recorded in 1,574 flights. May was the most active month for bird diversity and 62 species were observed on May and the least month was November and 26 species were observed. The WF site and its surroundings were evaluated including 1.500m buffer zone and 77 bird species detected in this area. Of these species, 13 (16,9%) had certain breeding, 7 (9,1%) were most probably breeding, 25 (32,5%) were probable and 32 (41.6%) were not breeding. Thirteen target species were detected and nine of them were raptors. Raven and kestrel were the most numerous species among the others. Considering the rsky flights, among 237 flight, 40 flights were occurred at rotor swept height (16,8%) and 56 individuals were observed at rotor swept height (10,4%). While the most probable collision type was 15.62% for model 1, it was 15.73% for model 2. It is theoretically calculated that if the target species do not show avoidance behavior, they will die by multiplying 0.38 birds / year according to turbine model 1 and 0.047 birds / year against turbine model 2. On the other hand, it was calculated that if the target species flying in the RES area exhibited avoidance behavior, the turbine model would die by multiplying 0.021 bird / year to model 1 and 0.023 bird / year to turbine model 2 However, no dead or injured individuals were detected.
