Relationships between religiosity, values, authoritarianism, social dominance orientation and discrimination

In this study, the mediating role of right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation in the relationship between the level of religiosity and the values of conservation, which are the values of security, tradition and conformity, and attitudes towards LGBTI individuals are examined. In addition, the relationships between research variables are also shown in the study. In the research, the participants were reached by the convenience sampling method. The research sample consists of 810 university students, 496 women and 314 men. Demographic Information Form, Portrait Values Scale, Right Wing Authoritarianism Scale, Social Dominance Orientation Scale and Attitude towards LGBTI Individuals Scale were used as data collection tools. During the analysis, correlation analysis was used to detect the relationships between variables, and Hayes (2013)'s Process Macro plugin was used to examine the variables that have a mediating role between the relationships. In addition, Independent Group T-Test and One-Way ANOVA analyzes were conducted to make comparisons between groups within the scope of demographic information. Considering the results, negative attitudes towards LGBTI individuals are positively related to the participants' level of religiosity, the degree of importance they attach to security, tradition and conformity values, right-wing authoritarianism and social dominance orientation. On the other hand, right-wing authoritarianism seems to be a fully mediating variable in the relationship between religiosity and attitudes towards LGBTI individuals. Right-wing authoritarianism is a mediating variable in the relations between security, tradition and conformity values and attitudes towards LGBTI individuals. In addition, social dominance orientation is a mediating variable in the relationship between traditionalism and attitudes towards LGBTI individuals. Finally, the research findings are discussed within the framework of the literature.
