Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic chronic disorder with disturbances of carbonhydrate, fat and protein metabolism and is characterized by chronic hyperglycemia that results from imperfections in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. The increase in the incidence of diabetes is due to longevity of life, changing lifestyle, obesity, sedantry work, changing dietary patterns and low birth weight. Cardiovascular and microvascular complications which are the most common diabetic complications are still an important medical and social problem, in spite of many oral hypoglycemic agents such as sulphonyureas and biguanides. All of these pharmacological modalities also show restricted efficacy and certain adverse effects such as hypoglycemia at higher doses, liver toxicity, lactic acidosis, diarrhea and attenuation of response after protracted use and are expensive particularly in developing countries. Especially very low side-effects and low cost, phytochemicals from natural resources open new approaches for the treatment of various diseases including diabetes. Therefore, there is a need for phytochemicals that have antihyperglycemic potential and are also cost-effective, safe and without long-term side effects. Potentilla fulgens, is edible short thin plant called cinquefoil. Its roots are used as medicine against various diseases such as cancer, peptic ulcers, mouth ulcers, diarrhea and diabetes in India. A few studies have been made in the literature on the hypoglycemic effects of this plant. As the actual literature knowledge were considered, it was thought that investigating the hypoglycemic efficiency of Potentila fulgens and comparing with the other antidiabetics should contribute to the study. For this aim; a total of 49 mature Sprague Dawley rats were seperated into 7 groups, each consisted of 7 animals: 1. Control, 2. Diabetic, 3. Gliclazide, 4. Metformin, 5. Potentilla fulgens 450 oral, 6. Potentilla fulgens 900 oral, Potentilla fulgens 450 i.p. One dose of streptozotosin 55mg/kg was exerted intraperitoneally (i.p.) to generate diabetes to all groups except the control group. Metformin (500 mg/kg), gliclazide (5mg/kg), Potentilla fulgens 450 ve 900 mg/kg orally for 3 weeks to experimental groups and 1 dose of Potentilla fulgens 450 mg/kg i.p. to 7. group was given. Control and diabetic control groups were exerted placebo by the same via. At the end of the experimental period fructose 1,6 di phosphatase, glucose 6 phosphate, glucose 6 phosphate dehidrogenase, heksokinase ve pyruvate kinase enzym activities were measured by ELİSA in the samples of blood, blood glucose and liver. Potentilla fulgens i.p. and 900 mg/kg oral groups decreased the blood glucose and liver enzymes like control group, 450 mg/kg oral exertion did not exhibit positive effects. It is also determined that Potentilla fulgens is more effective on liver enzymes when it is compared with gliclazide and metformin.
