Retrospective Analysis of the Relationship between HbA1c Level andPostoperative Delirium Incidence in Diabetic Patients

Objective: The aim of our study is to analyze the relationship between HbA1c levels and the incidence of postoperative delirium. Material and Method: Patients who underwent surgery at Çukurova University Medical Faculty Hospital, were diagnosed with diabetes over the age of 20, and whose preoperative Hba1c values were studied were included in the study.DRS-R-98 scale was applied to the patients to evaluate delirium. Age, gender, height and weight of the patients were recorded. Alcohol use, smoking, drug use history and additional disease information, type of surgery, duration of surgery and anesthesia were recorded. Results: In total, the data of 80 patients were evaluated. 58.8% of the patients were female and the average age was 58 years. There was no significant relationship between age and gender and the risk of developing delirium (p>0.05). The average operation time of the patients was 125 minutes; DRS-R-98 scores were found to increase as the duration of surgery increased. The DRS-R-98 scores of the patients who had grade 4 surgery, were higher than the other groups and were not statistically significant (p>0.05). No correlation was found between alcohol and cigarette use and delirium (p>0.05). The HbA1c value was found to be 9.0±2.2% in patients with delirium, and it was 6.6%± significantly higher than the group without delirium. When there is an increase in HbA1c levels, statistically, DRS-R-98 scores were also found to increase significantly. Conclusion: As a result of the study, a significant relationship was found between HbA1c and DRS-R-98 scores. Diabetes Mellitus patients with high HbA1c levels are at increased risk of experiencing postoperative delirium.
