(Religious) Mission of Department of Religious affairs abroad: the case (example)of Denmark

The Department of Religious Affairs has enlightened the Muslim Turk over such religious topics as belief, pray, at home since its establishment and abroad since 1980?s and existed as a body facilitator and accountable for accomplishment (Performance) of religious rituals (exercises). The purpose of this study is to examine from the eyes of Turks living abroad the religious mission carried on by the DRA in Denmark and to reveal its strengths and weaknesses. In this study, in a sequence, the relevant literature was reviewed, observations were made in Denmark and officials were interviewed with, and a questionnaire was formulated in the light of such discussions, which was applied to the subjects, and the findings were entered in computer medium through SPSS. In analyzing it, the frequency and percentage of each question were treated; Questions requiring further insight were compared in terms of age and sex. From the results of inquiries and interviews held, it is observed that the DRA carries on a serious mission abroad as well as provides religious training to Turks reached. It is quite obvious that especially the subjects under 40 enjoy services provided by the DRA. It is observed that the group at the age of 40-50 enjoy such services minimally because the DRA?s service has not been available in the era while they are growing up. In the light of relationships with the DRA, closest relation involves the group of the age of 55 and over. This group of age comprises ones who are retired, and who spend most of their times in mosque and the societies. For relations with the DRA, the age group of 15-24 ranks the second. The age group of 40-54 is one with the minimum relationship. As for the nature of relation with the DRA, it is noticed that it focuses only on pray and the Book of Islamic Principles. The subjects, the mission sent by the DRA in particular, are considerably satisfied with the services performed, and they are confident in their services. It is observed at the and of the survey that the DRA carries on its mission abroad successfully. However, it will improve its mission quality that DRA keeps the citizens abroad informed of cultural achievements (such as journal, book, conference) and of technological developments (such as the DRA?s web site, the modernization of teaching centers) and performs its mission more effectively. It is hoped that the findings of the survey will make contributions to the development of DRA?s policies on mission abroad.
