The relation between the neuropathic pain and vitamin D in patients with knee osteoarthritis The aim of this study is to evaluate the relation between the neuropathic pain and vitamin D in patients with knee osteoarthritis. 100 patients meeting the diagnosis criteria of American Rheumatology Association were included to this study. The knee radiographies of all patients were taken and the patients assessed stage 1,2,3,4 levels according to the Kellgren and Lawrence radiological staging scale were included. Visual analog scale(VAS), The Western Ontario and Mcmaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC), Lequesne Knee Osteoarthritis Index were used to examine pain, function and life quality of the patients. Their neuropathic pain states were evaluated according to the pain DETECT survey. Complete blood count, blood sedimentation values, serum CRP, ALT, AST, ure, creatinine, sodium, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, parathormon, ferritin, TSH and vitamin D levels of the patients at the routine controls were recorded. 62 of 100 patients with OA were assessed vitamin D deficiency (62%), 32 of them had vitamin D values within normal ranges(38%). 58 patients had negative, 12 patients had indefinite and 30 patients had positive neuropathic pain component according to the Pain DETECT survey evaluation results. Considering these results, patients were classified into two groups: the patients with neuropathic pain and those without neuropathic pain. A meaningful difference at vitamin D level between the groups was not assessed (p=0,664). Meaningful high scores were assessed at WOMAC pain, retention and total subtitles in the group with neuropathic pain comparing to the group without neuropathic pain(respectively p=0,006 p=0,005 p=0,008). The Lequesne Index values were meaningfully higher in the group with neuropathic pain(p=0,000). As a result, a meaningful relation between the neuropathic pain and vitamin D was not found in our study in which we examined the relation between the neuropathic pain and vitamin D in patients with knee osteoarthritis, but it was found that the neuropathic pain increaes the pain intensity of the patiens and decreases the function and life quality levels of the patients.
