The purpose of this study is to analyze both the `serial music? method whichis the most important innovation that the 20th century introduced to the musicand the `twelve tone technique? which forming the thoretical frame of thisunderstanding. The twelve tone technique having a extensive place in the `newmusic? understanding and being able to be taught systematically the inluencedomain of the twelve tone technique has reasonably expanded and in this sudy,it is analyzed particularly through the works of the creator of the technique,Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) and his followers Anton Webern (1883-1945)and Alban Berg (1885-1935).The analysis of the conditions which prepared the serial music in thehistorical period reserves an important place. Hence, it is unavoidable to lookmuch before the 20th century. In this sense, the study is started with `theanalysis of the art of music?s from the philosophical and technical view? andunder this headline `the structural elements of music? and `tonal frame?concepts are discussed.The second part is left to the subject `The music parameters changed in 20thcentury?. In this sense, the new approaches actualized related to melody,measure, timber and orchestration are analyzed. In the same era, the trends like`impressionism?, `neo-classicism? and `expressionism? which influenced musicdeeply as they did to the other fine arts, forms the subject of the next chapter.The must important part of the study is the fourth chapter called, `Theprinciples of the twelve tone technique and the innovations it introduced tomusic?. Here, first of all the `atonality? concept is discussed and the use of`series? is defined in detail. The following two subheadlines `back to thecontrepoint technique? and `the innovations in the form? discuss the applicationdomain which arisen again in the scope of the twelve tone technique. `Thedevelopment of the series technique? is specially covered in the scope of theworks of A. Webern. It is sanctioned to end the fourth chapter with twoparagraphes which summarize the general attitude after 1945 and theimportant composers in our country who use the twelve tone technique.
