Abstract (EN)

Aim: Proton pump inhibitors (PPİs) are one of the most commonly used drug classes worldwide, with benzimidazole derivatives that block gastric acid secretion most strongly. PPİs have been widely used all over the world for the past 30 years and are among the top three on the list of the most used drugs around the world. Its unnecessary and prolonged use common. It has been demonstrated that PPİs which are reliable and effective in the treatment of acid-related diseases have been prescribed for treatment with a non-evidence-based indication prevalance is 46-61% in various studies. In this study, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of inappropriate PPİ usage and the conditions associated with inappropriate PPİ use in the Dokuz Eylul University Family Medicine Centers (FMC) Materials and Methods: Individuals who applied between 1 December 2018 and 31 December 2018 and who use proton pump inhibitors were included in this study on a voluntary basis. Sociodemographic and clinical data of all the patients participating in the study were collected face to face with the patients via the prepared questionnaire. The data of the study were analyzed by IBM SPSS (statistical package for social sciences) 22.0 package program. In the statistical evaluation of the data; Descriptive analyzes (mean, standard deviation and percentage), chi square analysis, student t test, ANOVA and logistic regression were used. Results: 38%of the students that participated in the study were male and 62%of them were female. 24.3% of the participants were aged 58 and over. 65% of the participants use proton pump inhibitors for 60 months and below, 33.4% of the participants use esomeprazole. The duration of proton pump inhibitor use was statistically significant in terms of gender and age groups. %95,3 of the participants were presciribed by a doctor. Taking the drug at the same time daily was significantly higher in men than in women. The recommendation of the physician to use the proton pump inhibitors daily was statistically significant in terms of age groups (p=0.013). Conclusion: 95.3% of proton pump inhibitors, one of the three most frequently used drug groups, were prescribed by the physician and 24.3% were prescribed in family medicine. Although the vast majority of drugs are prescribed by a physician, they are available for many years. Although the study may be limited based on the patient's statement, the data can be extended with other studies to be conducted. Keywords: proton pump inhibitors, family medicine, rational drug use
