Evaluation of diabetes follow-up status of type 2 diabetes patients registered in education family health centers affiliated to Dokuz Eylül Üniversitesi Tıp Fakültesi Aile Hekimliği Anabilim Dalı'na

Purpose: Diabetes is an important problem that affects large crowds all over the world and in our country, decreases the quality of life and causes the death of thousands of people. Primary health care services are institutions that provide qualified and continuous care and are easily accessible to every individual in the society. Therefore, it is one of the basic building blocks in the follow-up of chronic diseases such as diabetes. The aim of this study is to evaluate the diabetes follow-up status of type 2 diabetes patients registered in education family health centers affiliated to Dokuz Eylul University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine, according to national guidelines. Method: This cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted in February 2019 with 327 type 2 diabetes patients registered in education family health centers affiliated to Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. As data collection tools, a follow-up form prepared using national guidelines on diabetes and an interview form in which the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of the patients were questioned were used. SPSS 24.0 program was used to analyze the data. Mean and standard deviation were calculated for continuous variables, frequency and percentage distributions were calculated for categorical variables. Results: The average age of the participants is 56,7. 54,4% are women and 45,6% are men. 19,3% of them were diagnosed with diabetes in primary care. The percentage of patients using only primary care in diabetes follow-ups is 25,8%. 74,5% use only oral antidiabetic, 3,3% only insulin, 13,1% use both together. 27,8% had acute complications and 17,6% had chronic complications. 91,2% of them have additional disease. Diabetes symptoms of 23,5% were questioned, blood pressure of 15,9% and hbA1c of 40,4% were measured at least in one follow-up. The lipid profile of 34,6% was examined and 0,9% was directed to an ophthalmologist for eye fundus examination in annual follow-ups. Target hbA1c was achieved in 60,4% and target blood pressure values in 70,8%. Conclusion: In our study, it was found that type 2 diabetes patients registered in education family health centers had insufficient follow-up, compliance with national guidelines was low, and the management of diabetes and its complications was insufficient.
