Slope stability analysis in filling dams

Abstract (EN)

Today, with the increasing population and developing technology, the need for energy is increasing. Hydroelectric power plants, which are among the renewable energy sources in meeting the increasing energy need, are highly preferred due to their environment-friendly nature, high energy production capacity and geographical features of Turkey being suitable for dam construction. Majority of the dams built in Turkey are embankment dams and it is very important to perform slope stability analysis in the body design of these dams. Slope stability analysis is a method used to determine the boundary conditions of embankment dams, and by using the slip circle method, the location of the possible slip circle to occur in the structure and the minimum safety factor value to occur in that region are found. Since Turkey is on active fault lines, it is necessary to examine the earthquake effect on the embankment dams. In the study, the slope stability analysis of the clay core sand-gravel fill dam and the clay core rock fill dam at the end of construction, operation and sudden discharge states of the dam body were compared with the safety coefficients under the static condition and earthquake effect. The geometry of the dam body was drawn with AutoCAD 2018 program and stability analyzes were made in Rocscience Slide program. As a result of the thesis study, it has been seen that the safety coefficients obtained in the static condition of the stability analyzes are between the desired limits, and when the earthquake forces are taken into account, the safety coefficients obtained are between the desired limits in some cases and not in some cases. In cases where the desired values are not met, it is seen that the earthquake acceleration values are high and the operation and sudden discharge situations are in the majority. This situation shows the importance of the effect of water forces and earthquake forces on the structure.
