Examination of manuscripts from Dr. Emel Esin Collection in terms of illumination, binding and miniature

The interest of Turkish people to the history of the arts of the book is one of the most important legacies that reaches today and continues its development since Central Asia civilizations. In this long period, it had its best and the most memorable examples in Ottoman Empire period. After the establishment of the Ottoman Empire, in the15th century, the arts of the book had the most evident development, and also in the 16th century it became classical and gave the best examples. Today, some of the examples of our traditional arts of the book are available in Dr. Emel Esin's collection. It is selected as a thesis subject because it has never been researched until now. As the subject of the thesis, nine manuscripts analyzed from the Tek-Esin Foundation's library, which was founded on the will of Dr. Emel Esin and donated her own collection. These nine manuscripts from 16,17,18 and 19th century consist; four Kur'ân-ı Kerîm, three Delâ-il'ül-Hayrât and Şevârikü'l-Envâr, one Tercüme-i Reşat Ayne'l Hayat, one Mecmu'a fi Fevâ'idi'l-Fıkhiyye. Thanks to this research, we had the opportunity to analyze nine manuscripts from four different periods in terms of arts of the book, the characteristics of the period with comparative manner. The thesis has two main parts. For the first chapter, the main title is "Dr. Emel Esin and Illumination, Bookbinding, and Miniature". In subsection, "Dr. Emel Esin and Illumination Art, Bookbinding Art, and Miniature Art" general features of these arts explained. In the second chapter, after these nine manuscripts cataloged according to the museum inventory number, the information will be given about the work's number, section, language, date, measûrements, page and line numbers, type of writing, bookbinding specifications, design, pattern and color properties of illuminated sections and for the last the field of miniature, subject, design and color properties.
