Drainage concept, types, flood disasters in Mersin

Floods and overflows, which are mostly seen in the spring and summer months when the weather warms up and the snow starts to melt; It occurs depending on the size of the precipitation area, topographic and drainage structure, soil structure, vegetation, soil moisture saturation, climatic conditions and river capacity. Floods and overflows occur frequently in our country, especially in big cities, due to irregular urbanization. By destroying and concretizing green areas in big cities, the absorption of precipitation by the soil is prevented and water puddles occur. In order to prevent these water accumulations and cause floods and overflows, the correct and adequate rainwater drainage system should be selected and applied. In the first part of this thesis, the definition of the concept of drainage, its importance, purpose and the drawbacks that may arise due to its inadequacy are mentioned. In the second part, the types of drainage are discussed. In the third part, the definition of the concepts of flood and overflows, their differences, similarities, and the events that cause floods and overflows are discussed. In the fourth chapter, the flood disasters with loss of life in Mersin were handled and the necessary literature was searched. In the last part, the results of the literature review and suggestions of the relationship between the concepts of drainage, flood, overflow and flood disasters in Mersin are shared.
