Spatial analysis of gated communities in Aydin

Abstract (EN)

Gated communities have emerged in the world for reasons such as increased fear of crime, security, prestige, and their desire to be separate and different. Gated communities are the reasons for the emergence in Turkey such as the effects of the neoliberal policies implemented in the country, high-income segment seeking prestige, ads promoting privileged life on closed sites and sense of security. Gated communities estates in the city of Aydın find a place as a pirivileged cooperatives, the first examples of gated communities in Aydın and the neoliberal policies carried out in the country . Gated communities, which are the symbols of the privileged life originating abroad, tend to blur and destroy in the boundaries and characteristics which are seperating of the each other the city therefore gated communities have a same and similar architectural styles, forms and silhouettes. The place has characteristics such as identity, belonging, historicality, cultural features and a sense of place as well as its three dimensional physical properties. The city of Aydın has unique and unique features that distinguish it from other cities with its historical events, cultural features, physical structure, climatic values, urban and local identity. It is claimed the gated communities in this city don't have the place identity and the characteristics of the place in Aydın due to similar architectural styles and forms. It was aimed to investigate whether there is a meaningful connection between the city of Aydın and the gated communities with the literature research and studies on the phenomenon of place in the city and gated communities. In addition, it was aimed to create a resource for future studies by researching the city's place spirit and place identity. In order to determine the phenomenon of place in the city of Aydın, information about the place and the spirit of the place has been interpreted with a hermeneutic method and transferred to the table through Norberg Schulz (1976)'s work "Genius Loci: Towards a Phenomenology of Architecture" by Norberg Schulz. According to the table, the phenomenon of place is divided into 3 phenomena as image, identity and meaning, and the place table is redesigned specifically for Aydın city. Thanks to the information obtained from the tables, meaningful results were found. It has been concluded that the closed sites in Aydın city do not integrate the spirit of the place and the identity of the place in Aydın city.
