The measurement of the thermal conductivity by DSC and its applications

ABSTRACTMaster ThesisTHE MEASUREMENT OF THE THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY BY DSC ANDITS APPLICATIONSMediha KÖKFırat UniversityGraduate School of Natural and Applied SciencesDepartment of Physics2006, Page : 40In this study, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivity ofpolymer materials such as PVC, PS, PP, HDPE, LDPE which are of great importance fortechnology and industry were determinated by DSC.The thermal conduction values of the PVC, PS, PP, HDPE, LDPE were found as 0.128-0.099, 0.143-0.126, 0.191-0.491, 0.490-0.434 and 0.113-0.060 W/mºC, respectively at thetemperatures of 48 ºC and 156.6ºC. The specific heat capacity values of PVC, PS, PP, HDPE,LDPE were found as 0.576-1.752, 1.318-2.388, 1.149-2.232, 2.124-3.135 and 1.788-2.516J/gºC, respectively between room temperature and 200ºC. The thermal diffusivity values ofPVC, PS, PP, HDPE, LDPE were calculated as 1.25x10-7-0.62x10-7 m2/s , 1.00x10-7-0.623 x10-7m2/s , 1.20x10-7-3.2x10-7 m2/s, 2.46x10-7-1.87x10-7 m2/s and 0.74x10-7-0.39x10-7 m2/s sequentlyat the temperature range of 48-156.6ºC.In conclusion, thermal conductivity, specific heat capacity and thermal diffusivityvalues obtained by DSC ,were compared with the data of other methods and these values werefound in good agreement with them.Keywords: Thermal Conductivity, Specific Heat Capacity, Thermal Diffusivity, DSC,PVC, PS, HDPE, LDPE
