Distribution of helminths in sheep in Burdur province according to fecal analysis

Abstract (EN)

In this study, it was aimed to determine the presence and distribution of helminth species that cause infection in sheep in Burdur province. During the research process, faecal material was collected from 297 sheep in total from five counties of Burdur (Ağlasun, Tefenni, Gölhisar, Yeşilova and Merkez) and the samples were brought to Burdur Mehmet Akif Ersoy University Veterinary Faculty Parasitology Department for examination. Fresh fecal samples taken from the rectum of each animal were examined by Fulleborn flotation, Benedek sedimentation and Baerman-Wetzel methods. At the end of the study, 170 (57.24%) of the 297 animals examined were found to be infected with at least one helminth. In the districts where the study was conducted, the infection rate varied between 49.1% and 62.33%, and it was determined as 62.33% in Yeşilova, 62% in Tefenni, 57.4% in Merkez district, 57.24% in Ağlasun district and 53.96% in Gölhisar district. 6 nematodes, 1 cestode and 2 trematodes were found in the sheep examined. In sheep, Trichostrongylidae was detected with a rate of 50.84% and Marshallagia sp. at a rate of 15.48%; Nematodirus sp. was found to be 12.12 %. Trichuris sp. It was found to be 0.33%. Dicrocoelium dendriticum, which is one of the species that cause infection in the liver and biliary tract, has a rate of 6.06%, Fasciola sp. was found to be 4.71%. Of the Cestoda class, only Moniezia sp. (6.73%) infection was observed. The most common type of lung worms was M. capillaris (6.73%), followed by P. rufescens (6.06%), D. filaria (3.70%) and C. ocreatus (1.68%). Infection was more common in females than males, but this difference was not statistically significant. The sheep examined were examined in three different age groups and it was observed that the infection was more common in sheep older than 3 years, followed by the 1-3 xii age group and the 0-1 age group. The prevalence in age groups was not statistically significant. The race in which the infection is most common is the merinos race, followed by the sakız and tahirova races. The prevalence difference between races was not statistically significant. As a result, it was seen that helminth infections are common in sheep in Burdur province and it was concluded that breeders should be informed about this issue.
