Abstract (EN)

In this study, blood samples taken from 21 lip and oral cavity cancer patients aged between 18 and 65 who were diagnosed and followed up in Van Yüzüncü Yıl University, Medical Faculty, Department of Otorhinolaryngology and T. C. Ministry of Health, Bağcılar Training and Research Hospital, Otorhinolaryngolog Clinic and blood samples taken from 30 healthy individuals in the same age range were examined and the levels of some trace elements and heavy metals (Zn, Fe, Mn, Mg, Cu, Cd, Co and Pb) were investigated. Levels of Zn, Fe, Mn, Mg, Cu, Cd, Co and Pb in blood serums taken from patients with lip and oral cavity cancer and from healthy individuals were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer method. In this thesis study, when the descriptive statistics and comparison results of Zn, Fe, Mn, Mg, Cu, Cd, Co and Pb levels in blood serums of patients and healthy individuals were examined, the difference between the averages of patients and control groups was found statistically significant (p<0.05). According to these results, levels of Zn, Fe, Mn, Mg and Cu, which are trace elements necessary for human body, were found to be significantly lower in patients than in healthy control groups (p<0.05). The levels of Cd, Co and Pb, which are harmful and have a potential toxic effect to the human body, were found significantly higher in the patients than in the healthy control groups (p<0.05). In conclusion, it can be said that trace elements and heavy metals in Lip and Oral Cavity cancers are important and determinant for the prognosis of the disease.
