The influence of the mood and velocity on creativity in the brainstorming

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of mood and speed on creative thinking using the brainstorming technique, a method widely used in recent years and known to significantly increase creativity. There is no literature in the previous years that studies the mood and speed together. In this study, the participants' moods were manipulated to have positive and negative emotions. A picture was displayed that would awaken positive emotions to the participant and then they were asked to write about an event / situation that they experienced in the past. An image was also displayed that would awaken the negative emotions of the participant and then they were required to write an event / situation that they experienced in the past. The participants randomly assigned to the control conditions did not give any instructions to the participant, whereas those in the speed condition were asked to write their ideas very quickly.Writing speed of the participants at the beginning of the study were measured and given the task of neutralizing the emotions to all participants. After emotion manipulation, the participants participated in a 12-minute brainstorming session on ways to improve student quality of life.The results of the research showed that mood did not seem to have an impact on creative thinking. It turns out that those who had speed instruction generate more creative ideas than those in the control condition, and that there is full mediation of flexibility between speed and creative performance. In other words, speed increases flexibility, which, in turn, leads to creativity. The findings of the research were discussed in the light of the literature.
