Emotional intelligence: The adaptation of BarOn's inventory

In the recent years, emotional intelligence has become an important research topic in the fields of education and counselling services. These researches have shown that emotional intelligence is a type of intellect that has been continuously improving throughout the life span. Therefore, especially in childhood, it is important to measure emotional intelligence in a valid and reliable way.Accordingly, the main aim of this research is, to investigate, cross language equivalence, validity and reliability of the BarOn Emotinal Intelligence Quotient Inventory: Youth Version (Short), (BarOn EQ-i:YV (S)) which was designed by BarOn and Parker in 2000.This research has been conducted with the sample of 491 individuals aged between 9-12 and in grades four to five, studying at five different primary schools located in Konak district of İzmir. In the lights of the results of the study, it was aimed to answer the questions given below:1.Does BarOn EQ-i:YV (S) provide the cross language equivalence?2.Is BarOn EQ-i:YV (S) a valid measurement?3.Is BarOn EQ-i:YV (S) a reliable measurement?The data of the reseach has been gathered with the help of BarOn EQ-i:YV (S) and The Personal Information Form and was analysed through a variety of statistical analysis techniques that given below:1.The Turkish Form of the instrument was prepared by 8 experts who are speci-alised in the areas of Turkish Language, English Language, Education and Psychology.2.Instrument validity was assessed by exploratory factor analysis and confirma-tory factor analysis.3.Instrument reliability was assessed by Cronbach?s alpha, Spearman-Brown, Guttmann analysis.The findings of the research has indicated that the Turkish form of the BarOn EQ-i:YV (S) is a valid and reliable instrument. This research is expected to shed a light on the field of children?s emotional intelligence. However, the findings of the research can only be generalized within the boundaries of this study. There is a need for conducting further research in order to understand the topic of emotional intelligence in childhood in detail.Keywords: Emotional Intelligence, childhood, factor analysis, reliability, validity, scale adaptation, BarOn.
