A research on emotional intelligence and organizational communication in municipalities

Communication is at the core of human life. Municipalities, on the other hand, are institutions that provide public services and work in direct contact with people living in their regions. With technological developments, it has become inevitable for institutions to improve themselves in terms of the concept of communication. In this context, the development of internal and external relations and communication between employees has made it necessary for the emotional intelligence factor to come into play. In this research, the effects of emotional intelligence on organizational communication were investigated. The universe of the study consists of Kozlu Municipality in Zonguldak province and employees of Zonguldak Municipality. The survey form method was used as the data collection method in the study. The first part of the survey includes the Sociodemographic Form, which includes personal information, the second part includes the Organizational Communication Scale, and the third part includes the Rotterdam Emotional Intelligence Scale. In the study, the effects of the sub-dimensions of the Rotterdam Emotional Intelligence Scale (appraisal of own emotions, appraisal of others' emotions, control of own emotions, control of others' emotions) used as an emotional intelligence scale on organizational communication were evaluated. The study concluded that emotional intelligence has effect on organizational communication. While the sub-dimensions of the emotional intelligence scale, namely, evaluating one's own emotions and evaluating others' emotions, were not found to be related to organizational communication, the sub-dimensions, controlling one's own emotions and controlling others' emotions, were found to be related to organizational communication.
