This study consider to assess the level of knowledge of newborn hyperbilirubinemia among nursing and midwifery students

Purpose: This study aimed to assess the level of knowledge of newborn hyperbilirubinemia among nursing and midwifery students. Material-Metod: The study was carried in november-december 2020 and involved 201 nursing and midwifery students of a foundation university in Istanbul who volunteered to take part in the research. The data for the study were collected using a data collection form developed by the researchers. The data collection form comprised two parts. The first part comprised 17 questions, and aimed at garnering data on the descriptive characteristics of students, as well as their opinions and thoughts on scientific research; while the second part included an assessment form for the determination of the respondents' levels of knowledge of hyperbilirubinemia, containing 41 questions, and scored in a range of 0–41. The statistical analysis of the data was based on number, percentage distribution, mean and standard deviation values; a Mann-Whitney U test was employed for the comparison of data without normal distribution, and a Chi-square test was used for the comparison of categorical data. A p-value of <0.05 was accepted as statistically significant Results: The students were aged 18–29, and were 82.6% female and 17.4% male. Of the total, 37.3% of the respondents were ssecond year, 40.3% were third year and 22.4% were fourth year students. The average total score achieved by the students from the hyperbilirubinemia knowledge-assessment form was 23.5±5.9. Conclusion: The findings obtained from the present study highlighted a need to increase the knowledge level of the students about hyperbilirubinemia through theoretical and practical trainings, and indicated that there is a need to disseminate information appropriate to current practices.
