The effect of parent-mediataed video modeling teaching method on teaching tooth brushing skills of young children with ASD

This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of video modeling by coaching their parents in teaching tooth brushing skills to young children diagnosed with ASD. Two boys and one girl diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder, aged between 5 and 8, and their parents participated in the study. The research was conducted in the homes of participating children. The research was designed according to the criteria model varying from single-subject research models. The research has two dependent variables. These are: the first dependent variable is that parents help their children acquire tooth brushing skills by using the video model, and the second is that children perform the steps of correct and independent tooth brushing skill. The independent variables of the research are parent training and parent coaching with video model teaching method. The findings of the study show that when parents are coached, they help their children acquire tooth brushing skills by using the video model teaching method appropriately. In addition, it was obtained as a result of the research that the participating children and their parents were able to generalize the skills they learned to different people and maintained these skills 21 days after the teaching sessions ended In the social validity findings, parents expressed positive opinions about the tooth brushing skill taught, the video model teaching method, and the provision of parent coaching.
