The agriculture and animal husbandry in the Edirne press (1930-1945)

This study examines the developments in agriculture and animal husbandry in Edirne between 1930 and 1945 by analyzing official sources, local press, magazines, various research works, articles and theses. It is aimed to understand how the agricultural and animal husbandry policies of the Republican period were implemented in Edirne. When the Republic, which lacked industry and whose economy was based on agriculture, was established, a number of issues related to agriculture and animal husbandry were awaiting a solution. These issues included land reform, seed improvement, epidemics and lack of specialized staff. The new state aimed to implement various policies to overcome these challenges and develop the agriculture and livestock sector. The steps taken towards this goal gained momentum after the establishment of the General Inspectorate of Thrace in Edirne. The General Inspectorate of Thrace carried out various studies and developed policies for the development of the region in sectors such as agriculture and animal husbandry. During this period, important initiatives were taken in Edirne regarding agriculture and animal husbandry, and support and trainings were organized for farmers. Thanks to the efforts of the General Inspectorate of Thrace, important developments in agriculture and animal husbandry took place in the region. However, World War II, which started in Europe in 1939 and quickly turned into an intercontinental war, caused serious setbacks in agriculture and animal husbandry both in the country and in the Thrace region. During this period, the impact of the war economy led to a decline in agricultural production and livestock breeding activities were also negatively affected. The difficulties caused by the war negatively affected the implementation and development of agricultural and animal husbandry policies. Key Words: Edirne, Agriculture, Animal Husbandry, Economy
