Effects of high-dose cefaxim on the reproductive system of albino male rats

In this study, it was investigated how different doses of cefaxim affect the histology of male reproductive system organs and sperm quality in laboratory rats. In the study, 75 albino male rats, 4 months old, weighing 200 grams, were divided into 3 groups of 25 subjects each. Group A was determined as control, group B as therapeutic dose, and group C as high dose group. Group A was fed normally, group B was given a treatment dose (1.33 mg/day) and group C was given a high dose (2.67 mg/day) suprax orally for 30 days. Several general effects were detected in rats observed from 10 minutes to 2 hours post-administration. Enlarged bladder and excessive fluid accumulation have caused abdominal enlargement in some animals. In the therapeutic dose group, the total sperm count and the number of those with normal motility were less than the control group. More abnormal and immobile sperm were detected in the therapeutic and high dose group than in the control group. Histological examination revealed a hemorrhage in the interstitial tissue, destruction of the seminiferous tubule causing failure of the spermatogenesis stages, and damage to the basal membrane. Lymphocytes and other inflammatory cells collected in the interstitial connective tissue and necrotic residue were found in the seminiferous tubule lumens
