The effects of intercultural development activities on the development of intercultural competence of foreign language learners

This study investigates the impact of a structured intercultural development program on high school students' intercultural competence, with a focus on four key dimensions: cultural intelligence, intercultural sensitivity, intercultural awareness, and intercultural effectiveness. The research involved 80 students, divided into experimental and control groups. Over the course of a semester, the experimental group engaged in 18 activities designed to promote intercultural understanding, including role-playing, group discussions, collaborative problem-solving, and reflective journaling. The study employed a mixed-methods approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data to assess changes in students' intercultural competence. Cultural Intelligence Scale, Intercultural Awareness, Sensitivity, and Effectiveness Scales were used to collect quantitative data. Pre-test and post-test results demonstrated significant gains in the experimental group's intercultural competence compared to that of the control group in terms of their intercultural sensitivity, awareness, and effectiveness, as well as in the cognitive, motivational, and behavioral components of their cultural intelligence. The quantitative findings revealed that these students showed a marked improvement in their ability to understand and adapt to different cultural contexts, engage in culturally appropriate behavior, and interact with greater confidence in cross-cultural settings. In contrast, the control group, which did not participate in such intercultural activities used in the experimental group, showed little to no improvement. The qualitative data, collected through student journals and focus group interviews, provided additional insights into the students' experiences during the program. The students reported increased awareness of their own cultural biases and stereotypes, a greater openness to cultural diversity, and improved communication and empathy skills. Many students noted that the activities encouraged them to reflect on their assumptions about other cultures, helping them to develop a more inclusive and globally-minded perspective. The role-playing and group discussions were particularly effective in prompting critical thinking and facilitating deeper engagement with intercultural issues. The findings underscore the value of experiential and reflective learning in promoting intercultural competence, suggesting that such activities can be effectively integrated into the curriculum to foster more culturally aware and empathetic students. By providing opportunities for students to engage in hands-on, interactive learning experiences that challenge their existing perceptions, educators can help develop the skills necessary for thriving in an increasingly globalized world. The results of the study have important implications for curriculum design, advocating for the inclusion of interdisciplinary and culturally relevant activities that promote not only knowledge of other cultures but also self-reflection, empathy, and communication skills. Future research could explore the long-term impact of intercultural development programs on students' personal and academic growth, as well as how such initiatives can be adapted to different educational levels and cultural contexts. Additionally, studies that compare various pedagogical approaches to intercultural competence—such as immersion experiences, virtual exchanges, or service learning—could further enhance our understanding of effective strategies for developing globally competent learners.
