A study on the harmonic complexity level of the same pieces used in piano education in faculties of education

In addition to improving their playing technique, students? perception of the harmonic structure of musical pieces is important in their interpretation sight reading and performance of these pieces. The perception of harmonic structure enables a better performance and develop their inner feeling of the music. While improving their piano technique, the fact that students have developed their understanding of harmony and taken it to a higher aesthetic level is important in their motivation and expression of the music. This study focused on a model which objectively measures complexity by calculating various tonality, chord, and vocal level parameters heuristically. This model was used to investigate the data which were obtained by analyzing harmonic structures of piano pieces and information regarding their harmonic complexity was obtained. The results were discussed and suggestions made regarding the further development of the model.
