Reconstruction in teacher training faculties and teaching goals

The purpose of the research is to gain an insight on reconstruction of the Educational Faculties from the ideas of teacher educators who teach "Pedagogical Content Knowledge" and also to determine the teaching goals of the teacher educators as well as the relationship between the ideas about the reconstruction and the teacher educators' goals. The sample of this research, which focuses on the changes and developments of the past five years and evaluates the program from the instructors' point of view, includes 223 instructors who work at the Educational Sciences and Elementary Teacher Training Departments of 20 universities in Turkey. In this research, "The Opinions of Teacher Educators about the Reconstruction Questionnaire" (TOTERQ) was used as a data collection instrument in order to determine the opinions of teacher educators about the reconstruction issue of the Faculties of Education. In order to determine the teaching goals of the teacher educators, "Teaching Goals Inventory" (TGI) was used as a data collection instrument. The collected data, were analyzed by using statistical techniques like frequency, percentile, arithmetic mean, standard deviation, t-test, variance analysis and correlation. The brief summary of the findings of the research is as in the following: 1. The changes of courses that started with the reconstruction stage of the Educational Faculties are unsatisfying according to the instructors. 2. It has been understood that we still need some more time to be convinced about the necessity of training high quality and quantity teachers that the country needs by reconstruction project. 3. The teacher educators of the Educational Faculties must be trained on "Pedagogical Content Knowledge".XX 4. The teacher educators of the Educational Sciences should be more of a "Field Educator" rather than a "Field Specialist" and more importance must be given to the topic mentioned above. 5. To close the undergraduate programs of Educational Sciences is not a good process. 6. "Pedagogical Content Knowledge courses" that take place in the program by reconstruction project, are not enough in number and their content is not satisfying according to the teacher educators. 7. Teacher Educators have chosen the six goal groups with high means. 8. Most of the instructors (43 %) who are involved with "Pedagogical Content Knowledge" have chosen the goal related to "Fostering Student Development and Personal Growth". 9. There is a positive correlation between the teacher educators' positive opinions on the reconstruction and the increase in the number of the teaching goals they have selected. It is understood that instructors of Educational Faculties are willing to reach all the teaching goals discussed with the help of the reconstruction process, but since the reconstruction process is quite new, it seems that these goals cannot be reached so quickly but can be realized and appreciated. With the starting point of the research, it is recommended that broad research and studies conducted will determine the weak and lacking areas, and the continuous efforts and studies conducted about the process will make the reconstruction project reach its goal at the Educational Faculties.
