Education of values in the journal of Education Movements

The Journal of Educational Movements, which was firstly published on January 1, 1955, and maintained periodically for 25 years until 1980, is a journal aiming at examining the education system and problems of the era from a scientific perspective and guiding the way to solve the emerging problems. It was seen that this journal, which relayed scientific knowledge in the field of education to the society and shed light on the future of the country, had a significant place among the educational journals of the Republican era. With this motivation, the present study aimed at examining the journal of Educational Movements published and edited by Hıfzırrahman Raşit Öymen in terms of values education. To attain this goal, it adopted the archival research design of qualitative research methods. The issues, which was published between the years 1971-1978, was found in the archives of Isparta Halil Hamit Pasha Library and other issues were collected from the Ankara National Library periodicals archive. The study consisted of three chapters. In the introductory chapter, information was given about the subject, research problem, scope, limitation, purpose, importance and method of the study. The first chapter covered the works aiming at promoting the history of the press and the journal. The introduction of the press to our country, the first newspapers and journals in the Ottoman Empire, and the periodicals of the republic and the educational journals published after the proclamation of the republic were discussed. In the second chapter, the Journal of Educational Movements and its founder Halil Raşit Öymen were introduced. In the third chapter, the values discussed in the journal were presented firstly by defining the concept of values, values education, the classification of values, and the purpose of values education. Later, the values in the journal were listed as items and interpreted by giving their lexical and term meanings. It was revealed that the journal focused primarily on morals and sincerity, honesty, respect, tolerance, cheerfulness, friendship, fraternity, patriotism, national culture, and love o nature. In the concluding chapter, it was made a remark on the subject and stated that the journal aimed at contributing to human peace and his adaption to society, and strengthening democracy and social cohesion in the community.
