Diller arasındaki yapısal farkların edebî çeviri sürecine etkisi: Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil'in Aşk-ı Memnu romanı örneğinde

The idea that the activity of translating is not a mere linguistic transfer but rather that it is a multidimensional activity with complex nature is accepted by modern translation theories in general. What complicates the work of translating so much is the existence of several factors which influence the process of translating directly or indirectly. Structural differences between the languages involved in the translation process are an example for one of these factors which influence the translation process directly. There are some similarities between certain languages in the world, as they belong to the same language family. But it is not possible to speak about a complete identity even between these languages. Since the lifestyle and cultural values of a community affect the morphology, the syntax and the vocabulary of a language. On the basis of these presuppositions, this study seeks to answer the question: "What effect do the syntactical and morphological differences between Turkish and German have on the literary translation process?". In accordance with this purpose, Halid Ziya Uşaklıgil's novel Aşk-ı Memnu and its German version with the title Verbotene Lieben translated by Wolfgang Riemann were analyzed comparatively on the basis of translation theories. First of all, the source text and its translation were analysed by taking the "translation-oriented text analysis model" of Christiane Nord as a basis. After that, the translation problems caused by interlingual structural differences were determined and it was examined which translation techniques were used by the translator to solve such problems. As a result, it was noticed that the translator preferred a content-oriented method of translating by disregarding some of the literary characteristics of the source text. In the translation process, he paid special attention to making the source text easily readable for German readers. But in the translation analyses it was determined that for some parts of the source text it was possible to keep both the content and the literary style of the source text.
