Differentiation of social classes in the context of economic and cultural capital: The case of Ankara

In society, while each social class builds and reproduces its own practices, it also creates a distinction between the other social classes. This distinction between social classes does not develop independently of the economic and cultural capital accumulations of social classes. In this context, how the social classes differ on the basis of economic and cultural capital in the direction of the data obtained from interviews with participants from different social classes, how these differences are reflected in consumption habits and lifestyle differentiation, spatial segregation differences on the basis of economic and cultural capital in the context of the theoretical framework is attempted to describe and comment which is supported by Bourdieu's distinction theory. Using the qualitative research method, interviews were conducted with the participants of the Ankara Yenimahalle and Çankaya districts using in-depth interview technique. Twenty seven participants were interviewed and data analysis was carried out under the categories of life style, consumption habits and spatial segregation in the context of social classes as a result of these interviews. As a result of the research, the differences in the lifestyle, consumption habits and spatial diversity of economic and cultural capital in terms of different social classes have been evaluated. As a result of this research, social classes have reached a conclusion that their consumption habits differ on the basis of economic and cultural capital differences, that there are differences in lifestyle, and that there is a spatial segregation within the city.
