The investigation of the relationship between child rearing attitudes and resilience, hope and optimism among economically disadvantaged mothers

The purposes of this study is to examine the relationship between the child-rearing attitudes of mothers with economic disadvantages and their psychological resilience, hope and optimism. The sample of the study consists of mothers living in Bayraklı, Karşıyaka and Çiğli districts of İzmir province, who receive economic inadequacy allowance for their children from Bayraklı Cahide Ahmet Dalyanoğlu Social Services. In order to determine the parenting attitudes of the mothers in the sample in the study, the 'Parental Attitude (Karabulut Demir and Şendil 2008), the data on their psychological stasis 'The Resilience Scale for Adults' (Friborg et al., 2003), the data on optimism 'Life Orientation Scale (Scheiver and Carver, 1985), data on hope were obtained using the 'Hope Scale' (Snyder et al., 1991), and data on personal information was obtained using the 'Personal Information Form' prepared by the researcher. For the qualitative dimension of the research, the data were obtained by using a semi-structured interview form. In the analysis of the data of the study, it was aimed to examine the relationships between the Pearson Product Moments Correlation and the parental attitudes, psychological resilience, hope and optimism levels of the mothers in the sample. At the qualitative stage, the qualitative data obtained through the semi-structured interview technique with the purposeful sampling method were evaluated with content analysis. As a result of the research, it was found that the variables of resilience, optimism and hope were the predictors of the attitude adopted by the parents while raising their children, and these findings obtained from the interview technique were discussed in the light of other research results in the literature.
