Assessing the association between total oxidant levels, total antioxidant levels and oxidative stress index in ectopic pregnancy: A prospective controlled study

Ectopic pregnancy is settle down the fertilized ovum outside of the uterin cavity. Ectopic pregnancies can be early diagnosis and treatment with modern diagnostic methods, nevertheless nowadays the most common cause of deaths in the first trimester. Currently, ectopic pregnancy is one of the main reasons the maternal mortality in underdeveloped and developing countries, but as a result of improved treatment modalities death cases decreased in developed countries. There are many factors currently known under etiopathogenesis of the ectopic pregnancy.This study aim investigate the relation between oxidan-antioxidan levels and the development of the disease and if possible investigate developing profilactic methods.This study was performed with 30 patients with ectopic pregnancy, 30 first trimester pregnants without any medical problems and 30 healthy woman without any medical problems who have admitted to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Gaziantep University, Faculty of Medicine between May 2011 and October 2011. Each of three groups were compared in terms of total antioxidant levels (TAS), total oxidant levels (TOS) and oxidative stres index (OSİ) values.Patient group TOS and OSİ values found higher than the control groups. Patients group TAS values found lower than the control groups.We may conclude that the increase of TOS and OSİ and decrease of TAS could be the reason for the ectopic pregnancy. Further studies are needed to illuminate this relationship
