Theappearance of disease causes big differentiation in person daily life. In this study patients withdiabetes, which is an important chronic diseases, group evaluated.The purpose of this study was to evaluate prevalence and factor affecting depressivesymptom in diabetic patients in Elazığ city. In this study, in 3 months period, total 217 patientenrolled to Fırat University Faculty of Medicine, Department of Endocrinology, and 210patient (96.7%) accepted to complete the questionnaire form. The questionnaire form, whichcontains general demographic characteristics and Beck Depression Scale (BDS), applied tothis study group.The mean age of the diabetes mellitus patients was 54.87±12.90. The study groupconsisted of 57.1% of female and 42.9% of male and 77.6% of them are married and 35.9%uneducated. In addition, 53.2% was house wife, 13.8% was retired and 1.5% was student. The60.8% of patients were in low socio-economic income level and 3.3% of them has no socialsecurity. 17.1% of patients were smoking. In 65.2 patients there were secondary disease inaddition to diabetes. While there were no relationships between age, gender, marital statusand BDS (p>0.05), there were statistically significant relationships between education level,job, socio-economical status and BDS (p<0.05). In diabetic patients, there were nostatistically significance between mean diabetes age, secondary disease in addition todiabetes, regular control and BDS (p>0.05).As a result, we have found that patients have high level depression symptom and somefactor increases this symptoms. Thus, priority should be given to teach how to protect andgain ability to overcome against to depression in patients with DM.Key words: Diabetes, Depression, effective factors
